Suzy Nees > biography
Suzy Nees paints, sculpts, writes, and develops web-based search systems. She makes her home in the shadow of Brush Mountain in Virginia.
Suzy Nees incorporates granite, coal, limestone, wood and found objects in her sculpture work. When painting, she favors sumi ink, oil paints, and wildcrafted dyes and pigments.
Suzy first began studying sculpture in 1990 as a stone sculpture apprentice at the Burlington International Sculpture Symposium in Burlington, Vermont. Her more recent adventures in sculpture have brought her to places like Floyd Fest 2008, where she was a participant in the Mojo Puppets theater installation.
Suzy learned the art and craft of stone work as an apprentice at Hannoki Studio in Hara Village, Japan. She has assisted with the design, construction, and installation of numerous parks, monuments, and play spaces in Japan and the United States.
Suzy's kinfolk include train hoppin' hobos Bernard Ludwig and Ludwig Bernard Nees, whose memory she honors via the Traces library for creative literacy. Her artwork is featured on the "Hobo Handshake" CD by the Black Twig Pickers.
